Truro, N.S. – October 2ndt, 2025Truro & Colchester Chamber Warns Canada Post Strike Could Have Devastating Consequences for Rural Business

The Truro & Colchester Chamber of Commerce, representing over 500 businesses, is urging the federal government to act swiftly to resolve the Canada Post strike and to safeguard rural mail services.

“Canada Post is an essential service to our business community,” said Jeremy Nichols, Chamber President. “Its continued disruptions are unfairly impacting rural businesses and their ability to maintain operations, with the potential for devastating consequences to local economies.”

The Chamber notes that 79% of its members employ ten or fewer people, many in areas where reliable internet and phone service remain limited. As a result, many businesses still rely on cheques and other time-sensitive mail to keep operations running.

The Chamber’s letter to MP Alana Hirtle also warns that closing rural post offices or reducing service levels would compound the problem, undermining everyday commerce and community connections across the region.

The Chamber is calling on the federal government to:

  • Support a swift and fair resolution to the labour disruption.
  • Protect rural post offices and preserve reliable mail delivery.
  • Engage directly with small business stakeholders when shaping Canada Post policy.

“Our rural economy depends on consistent, accessible mail service,” said Lexie Jasiewicz “We’re ready to work with the government and Canada Post to find solutions that protect both our businesses and our communities.”
